Telstra

I worked for Telstra full time for 10 years after I finished my undergraduate degree. Most of that time I worked for their CTO Hugh Bradlow working on operational support systems.

It is with immense relief that I can now say that the next time I’ll be visiting Monash - it will be for a class reunion. The original plan was to knock a MBA over in 22 months i.e. from Feb 2006 through until Nov 2007. Reality intervened, and required a further 6 months from me.
Doing this concurrently with a demanding, full-time role at Telstra just about pushed me to my breaking point.
The IEEE

I have spent a significant amount of time working for the IEEE over the past eight years. Here’s a summary of what I’ve been doing:
- Member-at-large, IEEE Transnational Committee (2006-2007).
- Member-at-large, IEEE GOLD Committee (2005).
- Chair, IEEE ComSoc Victorian Chapter (2004)
- Secretary-Treasurer, IEEE Australia Council (2003 - 2004)
- Chair, TENCON’05 Organising Committee (2002 - Jun 2004). I led the effort that secured our Section the conference (a two year, heavily political exercise), and performed some of the early logistics work. We were extremely fortunate to secure the services of Telstra CTO Dr. Hugh Bradlow half-way through 2004, and he has ably led this Committee ever since. I remain a member-at-large on this committee, though all of the heavy-lifting is being done by other people to whom I am extremely grateful.
- Chair, IEEE Victorian Section (2002 - 2003). I chaired the committee that administers our presence here in Victoria and Tasmania. During my two year stint as Chair the Section won approval to host two major international conferences (TENCON’05 and VTC’06 Spring) and we established and revitalised Student Branches at most of the major local Universities.
The Liberal Party of Australia

Yes, I am a member of the Liberal Party of Australia. Yes, I am politically active. Sue me. See below for the details:
- Secretary, Albert Young Young Liberals (AYPL) Branch (2003).
- President, Albert Young Young Liberals (AYPL) Branch (2004-5).
- Member, Policy Committee, Young Liberal Movement (Victorian Division) (2004).
RMIT Computer Science

I worked for these guys on a casual, part-time basis between Jan 2001 and Jun 2004. The work varied from semester to semester, but generally comprised course content preparation, lecturing, and delivering tutes & labs. Back in semester 1, 2002 I did content preparation and lecturing for the introductory Java subject, which makes me an Associate Lecturer as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, like I said: it varied.
I stopped doing this on weekends a couple of years ago, and have found myself missing it. It’s mostly about missing hearing the sound of my own voice.
